Last weekend, Oct. 18th, we headed up to Bendigo to explore more of Michael’s family’s gravesites. Bendigo used to be called Sandhurst and that is where William Grey, Jr. (Michael’s 3rd Gr. Grandfather – grandfather to Margaret Jane Davies.) was buried. Bendigo is an old mining town which has developed into a large historic town with beautiful, elaborate buildings built during the peak of the gold rush. Some of the largest finds of gold were discovered in Bendigo.
We toured the Central Deborah Gold mine, watched the making of vases at the Bendigo Pottery Co., cheered the boat racers on Lake Weeroona, ate at the famous Shamrock Hotel, and visited the Bendigo Cemetery and the White Hills Cemetery. The cemetery records indicate that William Grey, Jr. was buried in the White Hills Cemetery but there is no head stone and location is unknown.
On our way back to Melbourne we drove through Maldon and Castlemaine. Maldon looks like a movie set from the 1800’s. We had a picnic lunch in their park and felt like we had been transported back into the days of Michael’s ancestors. Castlemaine, like Bendigo had beautiful, palatial buildings from the wealth of the Gold Rush days.
