St James’s Old Cathedral “The Church of the Pioneers” West Melbourne, the first and oldest Anglican Church in Melbourne. It was built in the early part of 1842 and Michael’s family (paternal grandmother’s grandfather Lee Rowan and his family immigrated here in 1840) – This was where the children were Christen. It was originally built on Williams and Little Collins street but was moved (brick by brick) to the new site on Dudley and King Street in 1914 because the original site was in the Wall Street district and the property was too valuable. We walked past both sites and we could see why the church had been moved. The Church wasn’t scheduled to be open but when we got there the door was open so we walked in. A new Chinese Church group, who were renting the building for services on the off times of the church, were there having a camp planning meeting and they let us walk around. I took some pictures. We also purchased a history booklet about the church. We feel we were blessed to be able to go in at that time as the open times were during our own Church meetings. Family History really comes alive when you can walk and visit where your ancestors lived. Linda felt that way when we toured the Church historical sites in Missouri, Nauvoo, Nebraska, Wyoming, and now Michael gets to do likewise in Australia. How blessed we are to be here. How blessed we are to have ancestors that joined the church and family members before us who have searched out their families and have given us a wonderful legacy.
