It was a beautiful, clear blue sky day so we hopped on the train to downtown Melbourne and rode up the Rialto Tower elevator to the observation deck to see all of Melbourne and beyond. We saw clearly to the northern mountains and Mt. Macedon and to the south we could see the Yarra River meander towards Port Phillip Bay where Michael's ancestors entered on the Ship China in 1840. It was so clear we could imagine seeing beyond the bay to the Tasmania Sea, Tasmania, and the Indian Ocean. The land is pretty flat and heavily populated but there are still lots of parks.
We walked down Collins Street, and up Elizabeth and Swanston Streets to see the historic buildings and architecture. Between the major streets are two arcades – Royal arcade and the Block arcade where the street is divided with a covered alley way with fancy shops and cafés lining the corridors. The Royal Arcade has a long ornate skylight roof with an ancient clock as one end and the Block arcade has a richly, intricate, designed dome at its center.
The highlight besides the Rialto Tower 360 degree vista was going into the Victoria State Library. It was massive and most impressive was the La Trobe Reading Room – 5 story domed room with quotes and statements of famous literary authors engraved around the circumference of the room. Linda wrote down some of the quotes -Quote: "Books are the threads from which the fabric of our culture and civilization are woven" by Richard w Clement. "No two people read the same book." by Edmund Wilson. "One reads in order to ask questions." by Franz Kafka". "The word is the making of the world." Wallace Stevens. "Stories are the way to feel you belong." Booie Monty Pryor. "There is no frigate like a book to take us lands away nor any couriers like a page of prancing poetry." by Emily Dickinson. "Nobody has the last word" by Brenda Walker. A favorite
"The reading of all good books is like a conversation with the finest men [women]of past centuries." Rene Discartes. I thought of my love of reading the
Book of Mormon and feeling of the Prophets testimonies and the teachings of the
Savior, Himself while in America. So powerful. There was a special exhibit on the 4th floor that Michael had heard a lot about. The infamous Ned Kelly’s armor was on display. (He is the Jessie James of Australia, he became a folk hero loved by the people and gunned down by law).

We are really excited about your seeing so much of Melbourne. Their buildings are beautiful. The German sisters look very German, and I'm sure that cake was out of this world! Wish you could send some our way, Rich would love that. Stay healthy and keep up the "good news", & great work.
